CULTURAL CONTEXT
India has a rich history of the use of terracota clay and it is still widely used today
Indus Valley
Civilisation
For millennia, traditional terracotta Matkas and clay vessels have been used across every corner of India to store food, grains, and water, relying on porous clay evaporation to keep drinking water naturally cool and refreshing while balancing pH as well.
Architecture
to Cool

Over 5,000 years ago, the Indus Valley Civilisation used terracotta for spiritual figurines, inventive wheeled toys, food and water vessels, and the durable burnt bricks that formed their advanced urban drainage systems.

Matkas &
Water

Some old architecture has traditional terracotta Jalis (perforated screens) and hollow roof tubes. They block direct sunlight and utilize the Venturi effect to compress and cool incoming air, providing zero-emission passive cooling. This effect is utilized in architectural elements till date.
